Lough Allen in County Leitrim attracts fishermen from all over the world for its trout and pike as well as surrounding beauty. The rest of the family can enjoy hillwalking and adventure sports, and fine lakeside dining as well. Leitrim's biggest tourist attractions are its rivers and lakes and its rich tradition of folk music and poetry.
Local legend says that the lough is named for the goddess Aillion, who still lives somewhere beneath the waves, and is quick to anger. Be careful then, not to snag any fish who might be favourites of hers.In ancient times Leitrim was part of the Kingdom of Breifne dominated by the O'Rourke family in Dromahair, a pretty village in the north of the county.
